This month we discussed moving and the overwhelming options you have in doing so. Selling your home is the first step—but what if your house sells before you find your next dream home? In these situations many people turn to storage options to store their belongings during the transition. Portable storage units are a great option to consider for many different reasons. Here are the top ten reasons to consider using portable storage units during the transition from your old home to your new one.
1. Portable storage is secure
The materials that make up a storage container are often made of steel and other durable materials that keep it secure. Also you will be the only one with a key or pass code to your unit.
2. Portable storage is convenient
You can have the unit delivered right to your property to allow the flexibility and convenience of being able to get to your items when you want or need to.
3. Portable storage comes in different sizes
You don’t want to pay for more than you need, nor do you want to run out of space in your extra space! Portable storage containers come in many different sizes so you can choose the size that best meets your storage needs.
4. Portable storage is good for storing short term
If your house has sold but you still don’t know where you’re moving to, you can store all your items in the storage unit and then once you find your home, transport the storage unit to your new home and unpack it there.
5. Portable storage is good for storing long term
If you’re already in your home but find you still need extra space for your items; you can utilize the unit as a storage space and keep it on your property or in a storage center.
6. Portable storage offers climate control
You can opt for a climate controlled unit for items such electronics, valuables, and furniture that may require it.
7. Portable storage makes loading/unloading easy
When you store your items in between homes you want to be able to load and unload quickly and easily, especially if you’re doing so in a short time frame, such as in between moves.
8. Portable storage is cost-effective
You can determine the size of the unit and amount of time you need the unit for, therefore only paying for what you truly need.
9. Portable storage can be transported anywhere
Whether you’re new home is across town or across the country, you can load up the unit and have it directly delivered to your new home.
10. Portable storage is an established industry
Some people may hesitate to consider portable storage options because they think it’s a new industry and fear there are safety concerns. As it is a newer industry-it’s also a highly reputable one. Many portable storage operators are involved in their communities and industry associations.
Getting your house sold is step one of the moving process, but if it sells before you’ve found your next home, portable storage can be a great option to store your belongings when you’re in between the moving process. It allows for many different uses and can be a very safe, convenient and flexible solution for the transition period between the move from your old home to your new one.

Last week we talked about some inexpensive and free ways to get products and information to get and stay organized. This week we are going to discuss some of the best products that are available to you to help maintain organization in your life. Deciding to get organized is the first step to the process but to stay organized you need some great products that will help maintain your organization. Here are some of the best, functional products that help you get and stay organized.
- Clear storage bins – These are great because they are clear so you can see what items are inside and they come in many different shapes and sizes that can be stored under beds or stacked on shelves.
- Label maker – This is a must have for organizing. Labeling boxes, totes, and files keeps things in the proper place and saves you a lot of time when you’re looking for one specific item.
- Calendar/Planner – These are essential for keeping you on schedule with activities and appointments. There are many different types of calendars (wall, desk, pocket, etc) as well as different types of planners. Having one or both will keep you on top of what you need to do and will keep everything in one place.
- Drawer Dividers – Most people have “junk drawers,” however they don’t have to be “junky.” Putting in drawer dividers will categorize the items in your drawer and keep everything in its place. This makes finding the items that you need easier and quicker.
- Shredder – A shredder is important because of the problems we face today with identity theft. When you go through and purge paperwork or records you no longer need, it’s best to shred them rather than just throw them away. There are a variety of sizes for shredders so you can choose one that best meets your needs.
- Box bottom hanging folders – These folders have flat (usually cardboard) bottoms and are great for bulging file folders because they prevent papers from spilling out over the top of the folder. They usually come in a variety of widths to choose from.
- Helper shelves – These are great because they can double the space of your horizontal shelves by giving space above and below. They come in different shapes and sizes and give your shelves great organization.
- Space saver bags – These are great for storing bulky items that take up a lot of your storage space. These bags come in different shapes and sizes and are great for items such as: pillows, comforters, blankets and bulky clothing.
Once you’ve taken the first step and decided that you want to get and stay organized, the next step is finding the right products to get you there. Consider getting some of these helpful, functional products; they can help both you and your home to become more organized!

Moving takes time and if you’re doing your own packing (which most people will do) you’ll want to make sure you give yourself lots of time and plan it out carefully. Packing isn’t really that hard to do correctly, but it does take some planning and preparation to do properly. Careful planning and packing will save you time, money and a lot of frustration. Here are some great packing tips to help you keep this task as stress free as possible and to ensure your items arrive at your new home in the same condition as you packed them!
Make a list – Write everything down! No matter how you keep a list; whether electronically or manually—make sure you keep a tally of all items. This will save you a lot of frustration in the future when you are looking for a specific item.
Have plenty of supplies – Packing will be a lot easier if you have enough of all the items needed to get the job done. You will need lots of boxes! Strive to get ten more than you think you need because there are always last minute items that you forget about. Other items you will need are strong plastic packing tape and packing paper or bubble wrap to wrap and cushion your items. Usually, you’ll need lots more supplies than you think, so have extra on hand so the packing can go smoothly; you can always return unused supplies after the move!
Utilize wardrobe boxes - Not only are these boxes great for hanging clothing, but they can also be used for bulky items such as: coats, comforters, pillows, and blankets.
Color coordinate old and new rooms – Designate a color for each room in your new home, such as yellow for kitchen, blue for bathroom, etc. Then apply that same color sticker on the box packed for that room in your new home.
Keep like items together – Keeping hooks with pictures, brackets with shelves, and shades with lamps, makes for easier unpacking and less frustration in your new home. Keep all small parts and pieces together in plastic bags and designate a box or bin to keep them in along with cables, cords and wires.
Pack ahead – Anything you can pack ahead of time will save you time on moving day. Get seasonal clothing packed and out of the way and limit the quantity of TV’s, pot, pans, radios, etc. You only need one of each in the last few days at your old house.
Consolidate cleaning supplies – If you must clean your old house after moving out, put together a kit of basic cleaning supplies and rags. Clean anything possible ahead of time (the inside of kitchen cupboards, the oven, windows, etc.) If possible, vacuum each room as movers empty it.
Keep important papers with you – Your list of “important” papers can include: birth certificates, school records, mover estimates, new job contacts, utility company numbers, current bills, maps, bank statements, etc. Keep them with you in a safe place!
Moving may not be the most fun you’ve ever had, but planning ahead will go a long way toward making the process bearable. Besides, getting your items to a new location unbroken and undamaged is worth the preparation and planning that you will do and it’s less expensive than having to replace them all!

Last week we prepared you for one of the most stressful times in someone’s life… moving. Once you get yourself on a schedule for the weeks leading up to your move, the first thing you will want to figure out is how you will move your belongings. Two of the main options are moving trucks and portable storage containers. If you aren’t overly excited about driving your items in an oversized truck or having to worry about time constraints or mileage, portable storage containers may be the better choice for you. Portable storage containers allow you to pack your moving container at your own pace with no deadlines or time pressure; you move when you’re ready. Once the container is loaded and locked, you can call to have it picked up and placed at your destination where you unpack your own things. By doing the loading and packing yourself, you can save money on hourly fees or be given a lower quote than most full-service moving companies. You’ll want to compare prices and factor in your time and effort involved before deciding which moving option is best for you. If you decide to move with portable storage containers, here are some basic tips to consider:
Loading your storage container:
- Load the heaviest items first and always place them on the bottom of the portable storage container.
- Distribute the weight evenly in the portable storage container—don’t put all heavy items on the same side or you’ll risk an uneven container.
- Use dollies and ramps as much as possible to help prevent injuries, and ask for help with big items.
- Wrap all items in towels or cloth to keep them from rubbing against each other and getting broken or damaged.
- Use ropes to tie items securely. This will avoid them moving and shifting during travel time.
- Dismantle furniture or bigger items to allow more room in the container.
- If storing metal objects, clean and dry them before they are stored. To avoid rusting, wipe them down with a rag dosed with a couple drops of oil.
- Leave small walkways between the boxes so you can get to them easier without having to move things around.
- Keep items needed frequently at the top and in the front of the portable storage container.
- Put a lock on the portable storage container and keep the combination or keys to it in a safe place.
- Keep a list of all items stored in the portable storage container for future reference.
Once loading is completed:
- Call the portable storage company to have your storage container picked up and taken to your new destination.
- Once the portable storage container is placed at your new destination you can unpack at your own pace and call to have it picked up when you’ve finished unloading the unit.
Moving is one of the top stressors in someone’s life and deciding how you will move your items is half the battle! Using portable storage containers to load and store your belongings can help lessen that stress because of the flexibility and freedom they offer. You will still have to do the work yourself (and it’s a lot of work!) However by doing so, you will save money that you would have spent on paying professionals (there may be enough left over for a vacation!) The most important thing is to weigh your options and decide what will make this experience the least stressful for YOU.

Moving can be a very stressful time for you and your family. There’s the endless list of things to get done and the overwhelming amount of items to pack. There are several options for you to consider: hire movers, do-it-yourself or use a portable storage unit. The do-it-yourself route requires several trips and usually the help of some strong-armed friends. It often has to be done in one day, which can cause some careless errors, sore backs and scratched up tabletops and dresser drawers. Moving companies are a fine option, but they get paid by the hour and can be expensive, so again, time is of the essence. Portable storage, on the other hand, is an option that provides some flexibility on both the front and back ends of a move – allowing you to pack and unpack at your own pace. Portable units also make a move possible without an army of help at your disposal, as the transport is done safely and all in one trip. Here are some other reasons to consider portable units when moving:
- Portable storage units can be delivered and picked up directly at your door
- The container is designed to prevent contents inside from shifting or moving around
- The containers are ground level –to avoid excessive lifting and having to use ramps
- The containers come in different sizes to meet your needs
- They are temperature controlled
- They provide maximum security
Moving can be a very exciting time, but often it becomes stressful with the overwhelming amount of things to do and worry about. Try minimizing that worry by making the move as easy as possible. With all the options at your disposal, consider the one that will minimize your work and maximize your time. Whether you’re moving across the country or just across town—using portable storage units can make moving a smoother and easier task. Consider portable storage units for your next big move—you could just enjoy your move after all!

Back to school can be a stressful time for both kids AND parents. Kids are getting ready for homework, tests and activities; while parents prepare for the clutter those things can bring. Instead of letting the stress overwhelm you, embrace the change as a beginning of a new organized year! Here are some tips for transforming items that cause clutter and chaos to items that are neatly organized:
A. Coats/Backpacks/Shoes/Keys
- Simple hooks- assign each family member their own hook/space
- Shoe rack- keep pairs of shoes together
- Key ring- keep keys right by the door for easy access
Wouldn’t it be great to just grab these items and go?
B. Borrowed Items
- Basket/Bin-put in books and movies due back by specific date
This eliminates the searching that happens in the morning—when you are
Already running late!
C. Sports/Activities
- Color- coded bags- assign one color for each sport or activity
This eliminates the need to empty the bag and repack for each activity!
Getting into a routine from the beginning is the key to being less stressed and more organized for the fall season!
