The move is over! The packing is almost done. Now what? Now it’s time to actually enjoy being in your new home. This is an exciting time that you and your family will want to remember for years to come. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the first few months (and years to come) in your home.

1. Give Extra Attention to Children or Pets

Moving may be hard for you, but it’s often even harder on children and pets. Without understanding the excitement of a new home, young children and pets have a harder time making the transition to a new space and community. Spend time with them exploring the rooms of your home, the backyard, and the neighborhood to make the change easier.

2. Meet the Neighbors

Now is the time to introduce yourself to your new neighbors! Who knows, you could be meeting a lifelong friend! Sometimes neighbors will come to welcome you, but if not, don’t be shy about knocking on the door and introducing you and your family.

3. Get to Know Your New Community

When you decided to buy a new home, you probably spent a lot of time researching the surrounding community. Throughout the month after your move, make a special effort to go out and get to know your community members and local shopping areas.

This is the time to get to know your new home, neighbors and community! Don’t worry if you still have boxes to unpack… enjoy the new atmosphere and the new place that you now call HOME. Congratulations! You’ve survived the packing and moving process and you’re now in your new home! The move is over; and the fun can begin! Unpacking can be the longest part of the process—but it can also be the most fun. Unpacking gives you the chance to get your new home organized and decorated the way you want. As you begin to unpack the sea of boxes that awaits you, you’ll need to have a plan to help you get through it.

Here is the key to unpacking – unpack ONE room at a time! Looking at all the boxes that surround you can be a daunting task, but if you concentrate on one room at a time, it can lessen the burden of that task. Here’s a list of the rooms that should get unpacked and set up first.

1. Bathroom – this room is a necessity in any home, so unpacking it tops the list. Unpack the toiletries, shower curtain, toilet paper and soap. You’ll be glad you did when you need to get in there to take a much needed shower after a full day of unpacking!

2. Kitchen – the bathroom may be number one but this room comes in at a close second. You will spend a lot of energy unpacking and decorating your new home and you’ll need this room to refuel with food, drinks and snacks.

3. Living Room/Bedroom – these rooms can be unpacked at your own pace, however, enlist help for unpacking these rooms since there are usually electronics to hook up and heavy items to hang up or put together that may require some assistance.

4. Garage – this room may not seem to be as important to start with initially, but getting it organized by hanging up shelves or hooks will allow you to have immediate storage for items like tools, yard supplies, plastic storage bins, and others.

Don’t stress about getting everything done in one day… this is an exciting time and you’ll want to enjoy every minute of it. Give yourself time to get your new home to look just the way you want it! Do you have any unpacking tips you can share? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Moving is a dreaded life event for anyone. It’s stressful, exhausting, and expensive. When it comes to moving, there’s not much to look forward to other than being done with the move. That’s why we came up with these 12 moving tips to make your move (and life) as easy as possible!

1. Pack old towels or blankets between boxes to minimize the shifting of boxes inside the storage UNIT.

2. Do not over pack boxes. Bulging box sides can damage surrounding boxes.

3. Place liquid containers in plastic bags to reduce the chance of leaking.

4. Keep all items from each room together. Sorting of contents will be easier and will save time.

5. Purchase a few extra boxes. You never can have enough.

6. Wrap all items with paper to reduce scratching.

7. Position heavy items in the bottom of the box and lighter items on top.

8. Utilize oversized boxes for lamp shades, delicate cushions and pillows.

9. Leave clothes in dresser drawers and use wardrobe boxes.

10. Wrap pictures in bubble wrap for added security.

11. Remove light bulbs from lamps before packing.

12. Utilize straps to secure large items such as couches, refrigerators, dresser drawers, and entertainment stands. Units containers provide secure tie-down features.
