Once you get yourself on a schedule for the weeks leading up to your move, the first thing you will want to figure out is how you will move your belongings. Two of the main options are moving trucks and portable storage containers. Find out why. Read the rest of this entry »

Congratulations! You’ve survived the packing and moving process and you’re now in your new home! The move is over; and the fun can begin! Unpacking can be the longest part of the process—but it can also be the most fun. Unpacking gives you the chance to get your new home organized and decorated the way you want. As you begin to unpack the sea of boxes that awaits you, you’ll need to have a plan to help you get through it.

Here is the key to unpacking – unpack ONE room at a time! Looking at all the boxes that surround you can be a daunting task, but if you concentrate on one room at a time, it can lessen the burden of that task. Here’s a list of the rooms that should get unpacked and set up first.

1. Bathroom – this room is a necessity in any home, so unpacking it tops the list. Unpack the toiletries, shower curtain, toilet paper and soap. You’ll be glad you did when you need to get in there to take a much needed shower after a full day of unpacking!

2. Kitchen – the bathroom may be number one but this room comes in at a close second. You will spend a lot of energy unpacking and decorating your new home and you’ll need this room to refuel with food, drinks and snacks.

3. Living Room/Bedroom – these rooms can be unpacked at your own pace, however, enlist help for unpacking these rooms since there are usually electronics to hook up and heavy items to hang up or put together that may require some assistance.

4. Garage – this room may not seem to be as important to start with initially, but getting it organized by hanging up shelves or hooks will allow you to have immediate storage for items like tools, yard supplies, plastic storage bins, and others.

Don’t stress about getting everything done in one day… this is an exciting time and you’ll want to enjoy every minute of it. Give yourself time to get your new home to look just the way you want it! Do you have any unpacking tips you can share? Tell us on our Facebook page!

Moving is a dreaded life event for anyone. It’s stressful, exhausting, and expensive. When it comes to moving, there’s not much to look forward to other than being done with the move. That’s why we came up with these 12 moving tips to make your move (and life) as easy as possible!

1. Pack old towels or blankets between boxes to minimize the shifting of boxes inside the storage UNIT.

2. Do not over pack boxes. Bulging box sides can damage surrounding boxes.

3. Place liquid containers in plastic bags to reduce the chance of leaking.

4. Keep all items from each room together. Sorting of contents will be easier and will save time.

5. Purchase a few extra boxes. You never can have enough.

6. Wrap all items with paper to reduce scratching.

7. Position heavy items in the bottom of the box and lighter items on top.

8. Utilize oversized boxes for lamp shades, delicate cushions and pillows.

9. Leave clothes in dresser drawers and use wardrobe boxes.

10. Wrap pictures in bubble wrap for added security.

11. Remove light bulbs from lamps before packing.

12. Utilize straps to secure large items such as couches, refrigerators, dresser drawers, and entertainment stands. Units containers provide secure tie-down features.

  • Driving a rental truck

Throw out the old ways of moving and save time and energy while you’re at it.

What better way to capture the holiday season than with decorations? Remember the feeling of driving down the road and looking at the bright lights and decorations adorning the houses during the holidays? You couldn’t help but to stop and stare at the glorious sight! Being a kid admiring the decorations is one thing—being an adult and having to do the decorating is another! Here are some ways to keep you organized and make decorating fun and easy. Hopefully you followed some kind of organizational tips last year so that this year you don’t spend your time untangling lights and picking up broken pieces —but if not; here are some tips to organize you this year, so that next year will be a tangle-free year!

A. Group together items in designated boxes that you will need at the same time. This helps to keep items that you decorate in certain rooms or areas of your home together. Here are some examples of how you can keep like items organized:

  1. Box #1- Cards, calendars and holiday music
  2. Box #2-Candles, table-runners and window lighting
  3. Box #3-Holiday decorations, ornaments and tree toppers
  4. Box #4-Baking supplies and holiday dishes

B. Store items efficiently and safely to keep them protected and organized when they are packaged and stored away all year long. Here are some ways to keep your decorations intact:

  1. Use large plastic bins with ornament dividers to keep ornaments organized and prevent them from getting damaged or broken.
  2. Use small plastic bags for small items that are easily lost such as; nails, screws and hooks.
  3. Use small plastic bins for storing those items in the plastic bags to keep them together and organized.
  4. Use wreath boxes specially designed for wreaths to avoid damaging and flattening them.

Don’t forget to label, label, label! Even with plastic bins that you can see through, labeling the container with a list of the contents inside will ensure that you don’t drive yourself crazy looking through every bin for just one item—because it’s always in the last place you look!

Moving is stressful whenever and wherever you move. However, when you’re moving internationally it can be a bit more challenging because of all that moving abroad entails. You will need to prepare and plan carefully and double and triple check everything from your packing lists, to the movers who are getting you overseas and the proper documentation you need to get there. We have come up with a checklist to help you stay on track and be prepared for all that you will need to move overseas.

1. Obtain the appropriate paperwork

Make sure you know what documentation you need to move and live in whatever country you’re moving to. Some countries require visas to work or live there for an extended period of time and in most (if not all) cases you will need both an ID and a passport just to enter a country. You can contact the embassy to ensure you have everything you need.

2. Research the country

Research the town, parks and recreation, and especially schools if you’re moving with your family. You can research online and/or contact the U.S. embassy for recommendations about potential schools.

3. Find an international moving company

Research online for moving companies and then check the Better Business Bureau for the company’s ratings and licenses. Call the company and get all your questions answered, including pricing, insurance policies and their experience with moving.

4. Consider whether to ship your vehicle

Look into all that shipping a vehicle entails; find out if there are tariffs or special taxes on shipping the vehicle and check if you’re license is valid or what you would have to do to get a license in the new country. If you decide to ship your vehicle, talk to the international moving company about what their shipping options are available.

5. Determine what you will take with you

You most likely will not need everything you own to move abroad. Once you decide what you don’t need to bring, either get rid of the items or store them. Portable storage containers  offer short and long term storing options.

6. Pack your belongings

Make sure to pack properly for an international move. Most likely your items will be shipped by plane or boat, so pack carefully by ensuring all your items are packed neatly and tightly together. Prepare to not have all your belongings right away, so keep the items that you will need the most with you during the move.

7. Double check your packing

Make sure you’ve packed everything you need. Having anything shipped to you overseas will not be an easy task. Double and triple check what you’ve packed and make sure you don’t need anything that you’re leaving behind.

8. Stay connected to friends and family

Make sure to leave your contact information for your friends and family to reach you during and after the move. Keep in mind that cell phones may not work the same and the charges for using a cell phone internationally can be very expensive. Check the rates and policies of the service and make sure to advise your friends and family of the different options to reach you.

Moving abroad can be a very exciting time in your life, but it can also be a very overwhelming one! There are a lot of preparations to be made, but having the proper paperwork is a crucial first step. If you’re moving internationally, use this checklist to ensure that you have a smooth and easy transition into the new country that you will call your new home.

This month we’re focusing on moving and all that is involved in the process. There are so many things to consider and plan when moving; the first involves distinguishing what kind of move you’re making. Are you moving locally (within 30-45 minutes of your current home?) or are you moving long distance (anywhere from 45 minutes or more from your current home?) Depending on the kind of move you’re making will determine all that you will need to do to make the transition from old home to new home a smoother one. Here are some tips for both local and long distance moving to help make your move a less-stressful one.

Local Moving

Local moving is typically about 30-45 minutes from your current home to your next home. Although you may not be going too far from your old home, there are still some things you’ll need to do to make the transition an easier one

  • Don’t make lots of little trips– The amount of time and gas it will take to go back and forth could be costly. Load up everything at once and use the appropriate size moving truck or storage container  to get everything there together and all at once.
  • Buy wardrobe boxes for clothing– If you think just throwing the clothes in the backseat is cheaper, consider the fact they will get wrinkled and dropped in the process and mostly likely get dirty or stained. You may end up throwing out more than what a box would’ve cost you!
  • Move fragile furniture in your vehicle– If you have a big enough vehicle to allow for flat screen TV’s and computers—use that over moving trucks. These items are extremely fragile and can easily be shifted around on the move and get broken.
  • Disassemble the furniture– Just because you’re not moving far, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t properly take apart the big pieces of furniture. By doing so, the items will take up less space and will be less likely to get broken or damaged.

Long Distance Moving

Moving across town is hard enough, but when you’re moving farther away, it can become very overwhelming with more to consider. Here are some tips to make your move a smoother one.

  • Decide if you’ll do it yourself or hire someone– You’ll most likely need to hire a moving truck to transport your items but you may want to also consider if you’ll need someone to help you pack and load up the items as well or if you will do it yourself.
  • Prepare appliances for the long move– Unplug items such as the refrigerator, washer, dryer, and air conditioners a couple days before the move to prevent drips and leaks during the long move.
  • Make sure to switch utilities– This is true for both local and long distance moves, but when moving long distance you’ll most likely have to change or set up new service with a new provider rather than just give a new address. Make sure to do this in advance so you have the service when you arrive at your new home.

Whether you’re moving locally or long distance, it requires a lot of planning and preparation. Whichever move you’re making, utilize the tips above to make that move an easier and smoother one.
